When you need it. A solar water heater runs on sunlight, which means through monsoon and extended cloudy spells the tank does not heat on its own. A backup coil covers that gap. Why the build matters. The heating element is copper tube finished in long-lasting nickel plating, and that plating is what determines how long the coil survives.
